8-3Gameela Ismail spearheaded an initiative of Egyptians who decided Tahrir Square needed a Christmas tree. A flurry of tweets followed with suggestions for placement and decorations and when Heba Yassin from Khadra offered the tree it all came together.

Twinkling lights were part of the decorations, but that is where conventional stopped and the revolutionary started. Silver coloured combinations of crescents and crosses contrasted between the evergreen boughs and instead of traditional ornaments the tree sported portraits tied to the branches with red satin bows.

It became a tree of remembrance, decorated with the faces of the martyrs that lost their lives in the struggle for freedom and justice.
