Young protesters blocked 6th of October bridge Friday night after clashes erupted near Maspero building.
Burning tires and bonfires at both ends blocked the bridge from Ramses
Street. Clashes continued by Maspero building after a group of protesters allegedly tried to break into the building.
Security forces in charge of protecting Maspero fired tear gas to disperse protesters who, in turn, called for demonstrators in Tahrir Square to join them. Shortly after, 6th of October bridge was occupied by protesters.
The protesters responsible were mostly under 20 years of age, not belonging to any group or party but only expressing anger with the current situation in Egypt because of dire economic conditions.
6th of October bridge, known as the “spinal cord of Cairo,” links the east and west side of the city and is vital for the flow of traffic.
This is the second escalation of the night after other protesters blocked metro lines in the evening.
