Amid heavy media presence, a crowd of young protesters gathered in front of the Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in Mokattam on Thursday night to perform the Harlem Shake.
The event was organised on Facebook earlier this week by a group of young activists as a novel means of protest against the current political power, according to one of the organisers, Farid Sayed.
Over 100 participants dressed in a variety of costumes or wearing masks gathered to film a 15 second videoclip which would be shared by organisers on the internet.
Abdallah Salman, dressed in a Mickey Mouse mask and an Egyptian galabeya, said he came mainly to “have fun”. He said that after exhausting all the means, he is now resorting to a new way of protesting. “We have tried revolution, marches, strikes, and now we’re trying something new,” Salman added.
Gamal El Qenawy, a driver, said he knew about the event by word of mouth. “I’m not satisfied with how the country is ruled. I haven’t seen freedom or justice, so I want to express my opinion here,” El Qenawy said.
Organisers stressed repeatedly to participants during the event to keep this act of protest peaceful, amid chants against the Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood and President Morsi.
