The Minsitry of Foreign Affairs and the Arab League hosted Iranian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Middle East Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Sunday.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr and Amir-Abdollahian met to discuss the Syrian crisis. According to a statement published by the Egyptian side, Kamel Amr highlighted “the importance of achieving the aspirations of the Syrian people”. He also stressed “the tragedy in Syria must stop and the death and destruction in Syria every day will lead to the deterioration of the regional situation.” He added that it is in the interests of all the regional powers for the crisis in Syria to end “as soon as possible”.

Kamel Amr also emphasised “the need for the Iranian side to contribute in reaching a political solution that is required to stop the bloodshed,” read the statement.

Iran has been a staunch supporter of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s regime since the crisis began. The Syrian Economic Task Force claimed in February that Iran had been shipping oil and occasionally weapons to Syria via Egypt’s Suez Canal.

Amir-Abdollahian also met with Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil El-Araby earlier on Sunday.
