A United States citizen is due to appear in Abdeen Court in Central Cairo on Tuesday on a number of charges including using force against policemen and causing injury.

Andrew Blake, who is reported to be an English teacher for a South Sudanese NGO was arrested last Friday in the vicinity of Abdel Moneim Riad Square, near Tahrir Square.

Ragia Omran, a human rights lawyer, confirmed that Blake was being held by the Egyptian authorities and is due to appear in Abdeen Court on Tuesday following four days of detention. She reported that he faces a variety of charges such as using force against police, causing injury and congregation.

A spokesperson for the US embassy in Cairo said that the embassy is aware of the situation and is providing Blake with the necessary consular services. The spokesperson refused to provide any more information about the detained citizen.

Blake was one of 39 people arrested on Friday after Central Security Forces intervened in clashes at a Muslim Brotherhood-led protest outside the High Court building in Downtown Cairo. The fighting occurred along Ramses Street and Abdel Moneim Riad Square. Omran said that Blake was not participating in the violence but was an observer.
