Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Saleh Abdel Momen announced on Saturday the opening of a new freshwater lobster farm in Obour city, with $3m worth of joint Spanish-Chinese investment.

The farm is set to produce upwards of 4,500 tonnes of lobsters per year, which will be exported to the US and a number of EU countries, in addition to being available in Egypt at reduced prices.

He added that the farm would help create 300 new jobs, and was part of the Ministry’s plan for investment to make new job opportunities available for Egyptian university graduates. The farm will be established jointly with Ain Shams University, in addition to the University of Texas in the United States, and will seek to maximise the use of freshwater resources.

Yousseff Mamdouh, president of the Central Administration of Veterinary Quarantine at Egypt’s General Organisation for Veterinary Services, reinforced that the lobster harvested would be exported annually to the US and a number of other countries worldwide.

He added that Egypt was currently negotiating with the EU in order to identify terms and conditions for the latter to begin receiving exports.
