The Alexandria Media Forum on “Local Media and Development” began on Tuesday in Pharos University in Smouha.
The Swedish Institute in Alexandria and Alex Agenda magazine organised the forum to promote efficiency and professionalism in journalism for local newspapers, youth magazines, media training initiatives, video journalism and citizen journalism.
Several media entities are sponsoring the forum including Daily News Egypt, Al Masry Al Youm and the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression.
The forum began with a discussion between Swedish ambassador Birgitta Holst Alani, Faculty of Mass Communication Dean at Pharos University Fawzy Abdel Ghani, Public Authority for Information Service Chairman Mohamed Badr Al Din and the forum’s executive chairman, Ahmed Esmat.
Following the introductory talks, an open debate titled “Local media: Its successes and failures” was held between the chairman of Dar Akhbar El-Yom, Deputy Editor in Chief Abdel Hakim Al Aswany, and Editor in Chief of Amwag newspaper Hossam Abdel Qader.
The Alexandria Media Forum will host discussions and workshops led by professional trainers in local media administration, journalistic writing, and online media mechanisms. The forum ends on Thursday.
