Egyptian Railways recently called on citizens to refrain from blocking the country’s railway lines, a move sometimes adopted by protesters which exacerbates traffic and creates nationwide transportation delays.
In a statement made Saturday, Hussein Zakaria, head of the Egyptian Railways Authority, stated that blocking railways went against the interests of citizens who suffer from constant delays within the transportation sector. This affects large swaths of society, he said, including doctors, nurses, the elderly, and high school and university students.
He added that such acts “cause confusion along Egypt’s railways, which can cause delays and make trains arrive late to their destinations. Such acts further cause Egyptian Railways to suffer huge losses, in addition to threatening the livelihood of large swaths of society.”
The plea comes ahead of protests planned for 30 June by opposition groups demanding President Mohamed Morsi step down after his first full year in office.
