In a statement released on Monday, Ahmed Maher, founder of the 6 April Youth Movement, denied rumours that members had joined pro-Morsi protests in Rabaa Al-Adaweya.
Maher stated that the state media had “fabricated news.”
“The movement will not leave the streets until the overthrow of the regime and will continue to escalate the issue to civil disobedience,” read the statement.
State-run Al-Ahram reported that several members of the movement had joined Pesident Mohamed Morsi’s supporters at Rabaa Al-Adaweya because they sympathised with remnants of the Mubarak regime.
Ehab Khater, 6 April coordinator in Beni Suef, said: “One person does not represent the movement, and the official position of the movement is announced by the spokesperson or our Facebook page.”
“Abdel Rahamn Ezz, a former 6 April member, joined the protests claiming he is a 6 April member, but he is not,” stated Khater, adding that Ezz and other Muslim Brotherhood members had formed a group called ‘Free 6 April.’
Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya spokesperson Mohamed Hassan said, “this is not a rumour. A number of 6 April members joined the protests and spoke on the stage.” He added, “ 30 June was not the first time; it occurred a couple of times before.”
Hassan added that it is normal that 6 April would deny such actions of their members, but said that it was witnessed by all Rabaa Al-Adaweya protesters.
“The numbers were incredible, to care about few 6 April members joining, but this happened and it is not wrong to admit that they wanted to support the legitimate president,” said Hassan.
Khater accused the Brotherhood of trying to split the revolutionaries and form chaos. He stressed that members of the movement were spread all across Egypt, and have staged a sit-in everywhere.
Maher concluded his statement by stressing that millions had joined the mass protests because of the inflexibility of the Brotherhood and their failure in leading the country, stating that: “the movement will join the revolutionaries on Tuesday’s march, and will refuse the return of the remnant regime or the army.”
