Chancellor Hisham Barakat was appointed as the new prosecutor general on Wednesday.

According to Chancellor Mahmoud Al-Sherif, the judges club spokesman, since the annulment of the constitution, the president has the right to appoint the prosecutor general; he added that the president first sought approval of the candidate by the Supreme Judicial Council, due to the sensitivity of the position.

“Barakat is known for being fair, and most importantly, does not support or belong to any political faction or wing, and hopefully will fix the way the public views the general prosecution in Egypt, ” added Al-Sherif.

Barakat was previously a senior judge in the Ismailia Court of Appeal, and earlier this month was moved back to the Cairo Court of Appeal before his appointment as prosecutor general.
