Qatar’s foreign minister Sheikh Khaled Ben Mohamed el Ateya arrived in Cairo early Sunday morning to conduct talks with representatives, Egyptian state television has reported.
His arrival marks the first visit by a Qatari official since the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi on 3 July.
Egyptian foreign minister Nabil Fahmy was asked in a meeting with journalists on Sunday whether meetings were scheduled between Egyptian officials and the Qatari minister, to which he replied: ”As of this moment no but I won’t say a meeting is not going to happen.”
“The minister arrived in the middle of the night,” he added.
Senior officials within the foreign ministry also denied any meetings, stating: “The minister was set to arrive two days earlier.”
