Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil Fahmy travelled to Khartoum on Monday as part of a two-day trip to Sudan and South Sudan.

Fahmy was scheduled to meet president of Sudan Omar Al-Bashir and minister of foreign affairs Ali Ahmed Karti before travelling to South Sudan to meet South Sudanese president Salva Kiir Mayardit and the country’s minister of cabinet affairs Deng Alor Kuol.

Fahmy is set to discuss bilateral relations, regional affairs, and the “unacceptable” decision of the African Union, according to Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman Badr Abdelatty.

The African Union suspended Egypt from all activities following the overthrow of former president Mohamed Morsi, a decision strongly criticised by the Egyptian government.

Last week the African Union called on all groups in Egypt to exercise restraint following ensuing violence during and after the forceful dispersal of Rabaa Al-Adaweya and Nahda Square.

Abdelatty also stated that Fahmy would discuss Nile Basin and water issues with the two countries, saying Egypt was “embarking on a diplomatic track” with Sudan and Ethiopia in order to implement the recommendations presented by an international panel of experts concerning Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam.
