The prosecution has denied that the Prosecutor General ordered an investigation into what appears to be a leaked US embassy classified communiqué published by notorious whistle-blowing website Wikileaks.
A judicial source told state-owned news agency MENA that there was no truth to reports on Saturday that Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat ordered an investigation into 35 activists and public figures for receiving funding from the United States.
The Prosecutor General’s office called on the media to be accurate and responsible, according to MENA.
The document, the authenticity of which has not been determined, refers to meetings in 2007 and 2008 held between human rights activists, NGO heads and journalists and the US ambassador at the time.
The document was published in a post dated 27 November 2011 on a WikiLeaks Forum website and not the official website that is notorious for publishing confidential documents.
In June, 43 NGO workers, including 32 foreigners were all found guilty of receiving foreign funding.
