AFP UN leader Ban Ki-moon on Saturday welcomed a Russian-US deal on Syria’s chemical weapons and hopes it will lead to efforts to end the “appalling suffering” of Syrians, a spokeswoman said.

Ban has the “fervent hope” that the deal reached in Geneva will prevent any further use of chemical arms and “help pave the path for a political solution to stop the appalling suffering inflicted on the Syrian people,” said a UN spokeswoman Vannina Maestracci.
