Summer is drawing to a close; the oppressive heat of the days is relieved by an occasional breeze, a small sense of crispness appears in the evenings and street vendors are livening up the sides of the roads with shiny backpacks, colourful shirts and piles of sneakers. Parents gather around the different stalls to purchase the needed accessories for their children who follow the proceedings with excitement and a little apprehension.
It is the time that the rest of Cairo dreads, knowing full well that from this day on traffic will double. A time of uniforms ironed, pencils sharpened and lunches packed: Egyptian kids are going back to school.
