Two Al-Jazeera personnel were detained for four days, after being arrested on Thursday night, according to state-owned news agency MENA. The detained are Egyptian, Taher El Metwalli and Palestinian, Hammam El Yazgy.
The duo was arrested in an apartment in Al- Agouza in Giza, which included a studio for live broadcasting for Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr.
The Al-Jazeera personnel are charged with possessing unlicensed TV broadcasting devices, remote communication devices and recording and broadcasting video material with no prior permission from the Egyptian government.
The incident is the latest episode of tension between the Egyptian state and the Qatari-owned channel.
On 30 August 2013, security forces raided Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr’s offices in Agouza, Dokki and El Warraq after the government said a day earlier that the channel operates without legal backing “or professional ethics.” Broadcasting equipment was confiscated.
Three foreign Al Jazeera journalists were released on 2 September and deported on Sunday after being held without charges since 27 August.
However, on 3 September, the Administrative Court of the State Council ruled to shut down Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr after it was deemed a “threat to social peace.”
The day after, on 4 September, Al-Jazeera accused the Egyptian armed forces of interfering with its satellite broadcasting signals in Egypt and jamming it.
