The 50-strong Constituent Assembly tasked with amending the 2012 constitution will put forth a preliminary draft next week, said its chairman Amr Moussa on Wednesday, according to the government’s State Information Service.

Spokesman for the assembly Mohamed Salmawy announced on Wednesday that the assembly had decided to ban the formation of political parties that carry a religious message and that current religious political parties would be reviewed according to criteria put forward by a law addressing the issue.

Article 29 of the 8 July constitutional declaration issued by interim President Adly Mansour granted the assembly of 50 members a maximum of sixty days to submit an amended draft of the 2012 constitution, which was suspended on 3 July.

The declaration dictates that the amendments be subject to a public referendum within 30 days after they are submitted to Mansour by the assembly.

The interim president will then declare elections within 15 days after the amendments are passed in a referendum, and those elections must take place between one and two months following the announcement.
