High Representative for the European Union Catherine Ashton is set to arrive in Cairo late Tuesday night to discuss recent events with political figures, including interim President Adly Mansour.

European Union Special Representative for the Southern Mediterranean, Bernadino Leon, is also expected to be present during the visit.Ashton noted in an address before the European Parliament on 12 September that she had visited Egypt 11 times, three of which were this summer.

During Ashton’s most recent visit in July, she met with ousted President Mohamed Morsi in an undisclosed location – the only foreign representative to do so.

The EU foreign policy head previously described the growing level of violence and the polarisation of Egyptian people as alarming, while stressing on the importance of Egypt as an ally to the European Union.

Foreign Ministry spokesman, Badr Abdelatty, confirmed that a meeting will take place between the Foreign Ministry and Ashton.
