Egyptians like to speak their minds. Using the vast Arabic language in ever changing and innovative ways they converse, debate and argue about everything in life with vim and vigour and a well-developed sense of humour.
While the art of conversation is an intrinsic part of the Egyptian culture – even if you don’t want to, people will engage about the most personal aspects of your life – in the past few years political debate has often been replaced by long marches around the country’s streets that often end in violence, as happened on 6 October.
In these marches, images and symbols are carried to express opinions, and often they reflect the passionate way the participants feel about their cause. On Sunday, demonstrators in opposing marches shared their views with flags, images and a deposed president as a knight on a white horse.
