In a current project organised by Resala AUC, students helped with much needed repairs of houses in the Al-Dweika neighbourhood in Cairo. Al-Dweika is an underprivileged area in Nasr City and is not very well known. Most of the houses in the neighbourhood are run down; many have cracked ceilings that let in rainwater during wintertime, a piece of cloth or a slab of wood instead of a door, and the windows are often broken.

Resala AUC is a Community Service Club that manages charitable projects and works on development projects in Al-Dweika and carries out different volunteering activities.

Working with the Al-Asheera Al-Muhammadeya nongovernmental organisation, the members of Resala AUC collected almost EGP 23,000 in donations to help repair 13 houses in Al-Dweika last spring. Using the database, provided by the NGO, listing families living in the area that are in need of help, the members of Resala AUC visited their homes. They listed the most urgent repairs needed, created a timetable for their completion, bought the required materials, including sand and bricks, and participated in the actual repairs.

Through their hard work, they were able to provide 13 families with solid ceilings to protect them from the cold and rain, doors to keep them safe, new windows, electricity and plumbing.

The second phase of the micro-project is slated to begin now and the members of Resala AUC hope that they are able to continue raising funds so they can literally help build a better future for those who live in underprivileged areas in Egypt.
