The General Department for Public Funds Crime Investigations announced on Sunday that it is designating an operation room to receive complaints from citizens on incidents of bribery.
The operation room will also receive complaints from citizens on corruption on a 24-hour basis through phone calls and emails, a statement by the Ministry of Interior read.
Lawyer and Director of Arab Penal Reform Organisation Mohamed Zare’ said this is a positive step but it must be approached with caution. Zare’ said people will lodge complaints based on actual incidents of corruption, but others may lodge them in an attempt to seek revenge on an employee. “There must be a mechanism to confirm that the incidents happened,” he said.
The General Department for Public Funds Investigations, which falls under the Ministry of Interior, said this move stems from the ministry’s dedication towards confronting such crimes, which represent an “attack” on the economic situation of the country and directly harm the interests of citizens.
