Legal advisers of former President Mohamed Morsi visited him in Borg Al-Arab prison on the outskirts of Alexandria on Tuesday.
The Muslim Brotherhood confirmed: “Five people including Morsi’s son as a lawyer will visit President Morsi today [Tuesday] in prison.”
The former president met with his legal advisory team for two and a half hours. The legal team consists of Morsi’s son Osama Morsi, former presidential candidate Mohamed Salim Al-Awa, Mohamed Al-Damaty, Mohamed Tousson and Osama Helw. The lawyers are expected to hold a press conference on Wednesday to provide details of the visit.
Security around the prison was increased ahead of the visit, reported state-run Al-Ahram.
Morsi had been held in an undisclosed location since his ouster on 3 July but was moved to the high security Borg Al-Arab Prison following the opening court session. He and 14 other Brotherhood members are accused of inciting violence and murder outside the Presidential palace in December 2012. The trial was adjourned until next January following chaotic scenes in the courtroom, during which Morsi spoke over the judge asserting his legitimacy as president of Egypt.
Interim Minister of Interior Mohamed Ibrahim said on Monday that Morsi is “being treated like any other prisoner.” He also stated that Morsi would be moved to a cell separate from other Brotherhood leaders and away from dangerous criminals.
