Two policemen were injured when two people shot them with birdshots in front of Abu Sefein Church in Gharbeya City in Kafr Al-Zayat on Monday night.
The assailants were arrested on early Tuesday morning, according to a source in the Gharbeya Security Directorate public relations office.
“The shooting has no political or religious motives,” the source added.
The assailants were drinking alcohol near the church and were asked by the policemen to leave. The situation escalated to a brawl and the assailants used birdshots to injure the policemen before fleeing, according to the source.
Church shootings have been a widespread occurrence since the ousting of former President Mohamed Morsi on 3 July 2013. The bloodiest attack took place on 20 October 2013, when unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a wedding in a church in Al-Warraq, leaving four dead and 17 injured.
