An explosion near a checkpoint close to Al-Qubba Palace early Monday morning injured two policemen, according to Ministry of Interior spokesman Hany Abdel Latif.

Abdel Latif added that the explosion was caused by a homemade bomb planted near Al-Sawah checkpoint in northeastern Cairo, near Al-Qubba Palace.

Abdel Latif said that there is no information available so far about the perpetrators of the bomb attack.

A team from Al-Matariya Prosecution Office were dispatched to the scene of the explosion, state-owned news agency MENA reported.

Minister of Interior Mohamed Ibrahim held a press conference on Saturday where he allegedly revealed perpetrators behind “recent terrorist attacks”.

The ministry issued a statement on 20 October saying that 375 policemen had been killed since 25 January 2011, including 32 after the dispersal of the Rabaa Al-Adaweya and Al-Nahda sit-ins.

Policemen death tolls have increased since then, with more policemen killed in many governorates including Cairo, Qaliubiya, Sinai and Ismailia.

Two notable incidents were the assassination of Homeland Security officer Mohamed Mabrouk on 18 November and the assassination attempt that targeted Ibrahim himself on 5 September.

Police checkpoints have been a common target for attacks. One police officer was killed in Ismailia on Thursday evening when two militants on a motorbike attacked a security checkpoint in the city’s downtown.
