Grey skies with heavy clouds filled with rain greeted Egyptians on Friday morning. Heavy gusts of wind were accompanied by hail, rain and sometimes even snow. Those unfortunate enough to have to go out bundled up against the cold, and were forced to contend with the cold, driving rain while those able to stay home hovered around heaters and sipped warm drinks.
Most streets lack adequate drainage and so what started as small puddles in the morning grew into veritable lakes in the middle of many roads by the time the sun set. In Alexandria the relentless winds and rain resulted in a very high tide and drove one boat onto the rocks lining the famous Corniche.
