Unidentified armed men attacked a police officer’s family on Wednesday in Sinai, killing his wife and putting him in a critical condition.

Officer Ahmed Al-Mahdy, 30, and his family were going out to vote in the constitutional referendum, when the armed men attacked his house.

The men instantly began shooting at the family, hitting them all and quickly retreating.

The officer’s wife was shot and killed, while the officer was shot in the head. He and his daughter were transferred to Al-Arish hospital. Mahdy is currently in critical condition, but his daughter only sustained light injuries.

Security forces headed to Sheikh Zayed, the location of the officer’s house, to investigate.

Egyptians headed to the ballot stations on Tuesday to participate in the referendum on the draft constitution, which was finalised on 3 December.

Minor clashes have been reported in different governorates with the Ministry of Health reporting eight deaths and independent researchers counting 11.
