Policeman killed in North Sinai

Noncommissioned police officer Ramadan Ghoneim Abdel Samad was gunned down in the volatile governorate of North Sinai on Monday afternoon on his way to work in Al-Arish, announced the Ministry of Interior.

Unknown gunmen attacked Abdel Samad, who worked at the North Sinai Security Directorate, according to the ministry’s statement.

The interior ministry said it “mourned with deep grief and sorrow”, adding that Minister of Interior ordered for “all aspects of care for the family” of Abdel Samad.

Last Wednesday, an army brigadier general and colonel were killed in a raid on the hideout of armed militants suspected of being involved in a series of deadly attacks. Five suspects were also killed in the raid, according to the Ministry of Interior.

North Sinai has seen an ongoing a low-level insurgency with sustained attacks on security personnel.

On Monday the armed forces announced that it had arrested 26 suspected militants across the country, 21 in a series of raids in North Sinai. The army added in its statement that a militant was killed during the raids while attempting to plant an explosive device
