The Cairo Criminal Court handed down on Saturday 10 year jail sentences to 102 people for participating in violent clashes last July. Two others received seven year sentences in the trial held at the Police Institute in Tora Prison.

The defendants were found guilty on several charges, including: the intentional murder of civilians, attempted murder, attacking public and private property and possession of a firearm and ammunition without a license, according to state-owned Al-Ahram.

The clashes occurred in the El-Zaher district of Cairo, near to Ramses Square, in July. At the time the Ministry of Health reported that seven people had died and 261 were injured as a result oif the violence.

The Ministry of Interior said in July that supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and former president Mohamed Morsi were blocking roads and throwing stones at cars. The security forces warned demonstrators in the area to disperse, the ministry said, and when they failed to do so, tear gas was used to disperse the crowd.

Violent clashes occurred across Egypt last summer following the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi. His supporters demonstrated calling for the reinstatement of the former president who is now facing several criminal charges.
