Egypt’s ambassador to Jordan on Wednesday called upon Egyptians working in the country to quickly rectify their illegal status before the grace period ends 15 May.
The Egyptian embassy in Amman on 4 February ordered Egyptian migrant workers to register with the Jordanian labour office.
In a Wednesday statement, Ambassador Khaled Tharwat stressed that Jordan has the right to organise its labour market the way it sees fit, including suspending and deporting workers, in accordance with Jordanian law. After deportation, the law stipulates that workers cannot return to the country for three years.
The ambassador also thanked Jordanian authorities for their cooperation during the grace period. During the registration period, the government has ceased its campaigns and security raids against illegal migrants and workers who have work permits for specific jobs, but take jobs in other industries.
According to the Egyptian embassy, there are about 800,000 Egyptian workers in Jordan, however only 167,000 of them are registered migrants.
