Lieutenant Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed was shot and killed Tuesday in Sharqeya in an exchange of fire that ended in the death of one of his attackers, according to a Ministry of Interior statement.
Ahmed was on his way home to Qaliubiya when masked gunmen fired at his car, resulting in an exchange of fire that killed the lieutenant and one of the attackers.
The attacker’s identity was not revealed in the statement.
The Ministry of Interior is investigating the crime.
Attacks against police officers in Sharqeya have been common since Mohamed Morsi’s ouster on 3 July. In February and March, attacks seemed to grow in frequency.
In February Sharqeya Governorate saw four similar attacks against security forces in one week alone, claiming the lives of three police officers. After Major Mohamed Eid, also a Homeland Security officer, was killed on 24 February, then-Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi said such attacks reflect “the bankruptcy of terrorist elements”.
On 8 March, two police officers were critically wounded by two gunmen on a motorbike. A third officer managed to mortally wound one of the attackers, a 29 year-old theology student.
The Ministry of Interior has denied a link between the assassinations.
