On Saturday evening presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahy met with a delegation of representatives from civil society organisations and discussed his platform concerning corruption and human rights.
The Nasserist politician during a television interview on Saturday evening said his biggest challenge as president would be to integrate the youth in national projects. He also said those who did not practice violence or discrimination should not be subject to jail time, but also vowed that terrorism would be dealt with under the scope of the law.
The Salafi Al-Nour Party, the only major Islamist party to announce its participation in presidential elections, continued campaigning for Al-Sisi across various governorates, including Alexandria and Fayoum.
In a press conference in the canal city of Suez, Chairman of Al-Nour Party Younes Makhioun, addressing Islamic law in the context of the party’s endorsement of Al-Sisi, said that the field marshal would be subject to the constitution if he became president, and would therefore have to adhere to its contents that deal with Islamic law.
Makhioun also said that future elected House of Representatives would be the one “primarily responsible” for activating articles of the constitution.
Assistant secretary-general of the party Mohamed Ibrahim Mansour in a press conference in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Sohag said the military chief was favoured because his election would make state institutions “more committed and active”.
The former Minister of Defence is scheduled to be interviewed on Sunday evening.
Voting for Egyptians abroad was extended to this Monday. Polls inside the country will open on 26 and 27 May.
