Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil Fahmy discussed bi-lateral relations and the status of Egypt’s membership to the African Union in a series of Friday telephone calls.
Fahmy spoke with his Ugandan and Gambian counterparts highlighting the “need to work on strengthening bilateral relations in various fields of political, economic and trade so as to achieve common interests”, according to the ministry spokesman.
The ministers also discussed regional issues including “ways to advance the development efforts and achieving stability within the continent” and conflict resolution efforts in the Horn of Africa and Central African Republic.
Fahmy also contacted Egypt’s ambassador to Ethiopia to discuss “ways to enhance cooperation between Egypt and the African Union and various institutions”.
Egypt’s membership to the African Union was suspended following the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. The union viewed the change of government in Egypt as “unconstitutional”, which goes against the bloc’s charter.
Since then the interim government and its Ministry of Foreign Affairs has undertaken diplomatic campaigns throughout Africa in an effort to gain reinstatement into the council.
