President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi issued on Monday a presidential decree ordering the formation of a supreme committee for legislative reform.
The committee, to be headed by Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb, will be tasked with drafting, amending and revising draft legislations prepared by the presidency, the cabinet or its different ministries in accordance with the constitution, reported state-run news agency MENA.
The committee’s job is to coordinate between different legislations to ensure they do not overlap or fall short of the necessary requirements and are not duplicated or mysterious, reported MENA.
The committee will branch out into subcommittees to work on economic, administrative, social, judicial, educational and state security legislations. After finalising draft legislations, the committee will refer them back to the cabinet, which will present them to the State Council’s legislation department for revision.
The prime minister is scheduled to provide the president with monthly reports regarding the committee’s activities. “Urgent” legislations should be finalised by the committee and presented to the president within two months after the committee is enacted, reported MENA.
Alongside the prime minister, the committee’s members will also include the minister(s) of House of Representatives’ Affairs, Transitional Justice and Justice. It will also include the state’s Grand Mufti, the head of the State Council, Al-Azhar’s deputy head, three law university professors, two judges and two lawyers, among others.
Al-Sisi’s first presidential decree was issued during his inauguration ceremony on 8 June, granting former President Adly Mansour the Order of the Nile.
