An explosion Tuesday morning outside a building in Maadi left a six-year old child with minor injuries after he played with an explosive device, triggering it.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Interior said the boy, who was playing in a desert area next to his house in Maadi’s Al-Basteen neighbourhood, found the explosive device in the sand.

Bomb experts at the scene said the cause of the explosion was a homemade device. They found and dismantled two other similar devices.

Security forces are intensifying efforts to catch the perpetrators, the statement said.

Since the July 2013 ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi, Egypt has seen an upsurge in bombings and attacks, often targeting security forces.

A car bomb explosion in a Giza village last month killed three and police thwarted another attempted car bombing shortly after.
