Five people were killed on Thursday after demonstrators and police clashed in different parts of the country, one year on from the violent dispersal of protest camps supporting former president Mohamed Morsi.
Four people were killed and 18 injured in four governorates on Thursday, according to state run news agency MENA, citing the Ministry of Health.
The Ministry of Interior also confirmed in a Thursday statement the death of one policeman occurring in a confrontation with protesters, and the injury of one other. The ministry also confirmed that 114 people were arrested throughout the day.
The Muslim Brotherhood confirmed the deaths of four protesters, saying in a Thursday statement: “Demonstrations have erupted all across the country from Alexandria to Aswan, calling for bread, freedom and social justice.”
Thursday marked the first anniversary of the clearing of the Rabaa Al-Adaweya and Nahda Squares sit-ins, which Human Rights Watch says resulted in the deaths of at least 904 people. The Brotherhood and the Anti-Coup Alliance called on people to demonstrate on Thursday to mark the anniversary.
