Renewed clashes between demonstrators and security forces on Friday have resulted in 31 arrests, according to state-run Al-Ahram.

In Alexandria, 16 alleged Brotherhood members were arrested for inciting violence, blocking the road, and distributing flyers against the police and the army.

Security forces also dispersed rallies by anti-government protesters in Fayoum, arresting 15, reported Al-Ahram. “The suspects were calling on citizens to participate in a new wave of protests next Tuesday.”

The pro-Morsi Anti-Coup Alliance issued a statement on Wednesday calling for a new wave of demonstrations titled “The Poor’s Uprising”.

The statement said that the current regime is not only oppressing the Egyptian people, but also depriving them of basic needs such as electricity and food. “The alliance continues to mobilise all segments of the Egyptian people for escalating peaceful revolutionary action in preparation for the ultimate decisive point – in time and in accordance with its strategic vision.”

Thousands of anti-government protesters have been arrested during protests since the ouster of Islamist former president Mohamed Morsi last year, amid a systematic state crackdown on dissenting voices.
