Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is slated to discuss the situation in Libya with his counterparts in Madrid in a two-day conference of Libya’s neighbouring countries on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to a foreign ministry statement.
The ministerial conference will be attended by the foreign ministers of Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Mauritania, Egypt, Sudan, Chad and Niger, as well as Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Malta, Greece and Cyprus. Representatives from the United Nations, the Arab League and the European Union will also be present.
During the conference Shoukry will emphasise Egypt’s stance on Libya and the Egyptian initiative, which was announced in the last ministerial meeting of Libya’s neighbouring countries in Cairo.
Egypt’s position on the Libyan case is based on respecting Libya’s sovereignty, encouraging the start of a dialogue between political entities and supporting the country’s legitimate institutions in order to achieve national reconciliation, according to the foreign ministry spokesman.
Shoukry is expected to meet with the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism José Manuel Soria López.
The minister will also meet his counterpart Jose Manuel Marjabo; the meeting will address bilateral relations between the two countries and the efforts made by the Egyptian government to reform its economy. The ministers will also discuss the situation in Libya, Syria, Iraq, and the fight on terrorism.
