The Nasr City Misdemeanours Court sentenced Wednesday 11 male and 4 female Al-Azhar University students to four years in prison over violating the Protest Law, the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) said in a statement.

The court neither heard the witness testimonies nor allowed the defence team to make their pleas, according to the statement.

The 15 students were found guilty of holding an illegal gathering without permit, thuggery and resisting arrest.

According to AFTE, the students’ lawyers had earlier called on the court to allow them to acquire official documents that prove the defendants were sitting for exams inside the university building during the protests held on 12 January 2014.
