Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb said that parliamentary elections are expected to occur by the end of this year with no further delay to complete the roadmap.
The announcement was made during a phone interview with TV presenter Amr Adib on Monday.
Mehleb said that logistical and administrative preparations are being made for the coming parliamentary elections, including preparations of the parliament’s building.
Mehleb also noted that there are currently no amendments planned to the Protest law, stating that demands are being presented to amend the law. “We are listening to all the opinions on the matter,” he stated, but so far, the topic of amending the Protest Law has not been broached the cabinet meetings.
He added that, compared to laws in other countries that preceded Egypt in democracy, “it’s mild”.
Rights groups have expressed their opposition to the Protest Law and called for authorities to meet the demands of detainees on hunger striking calling for its cancellation.
Mehleb also said that there will be no cabinet reshuffling soon. He added that some governors might be reshuffled as President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi always stresses “high competencies” because governors’ jobs are of “utmost importance”.
According to Mehleb, he met with the president after his return from a recent visit to the UN General Assembly in the US. Mehleb and Al-Sisi discussed the internal situation in Egypt and the projects the government is implementing.
