A group of protesters had held a vigil in Cairo’s Shubra neighbourhood Thursday night to commemorate the three-year anniversary of the massacre, according to a statement by the Maspero Youth Union.
A memorial mass for the victims of the Maspero massacre is to be held on Friday in the Archangel Michael Church in 6th of October City, the Families of Maspero Martyrs Union said.
On 9 October 2011, Egyptian military forces attacked Coptic protesters in front of Maspero’s state television building in Cairo, killing 27, and injuring at least 300 more.
Several groups, including the Maspero Youth Union, Egypt’s Copts Coalition and others condemned the incident, saying that three years have passed and no form of justice has been made. They are demanding investigations into the case be re-opened.
“Three year have passed, and justice is still absent. If you are relying on us forgetting, we haven’t forgotten,” the official Maspero Youth Union page wrote.
The protesters, surrounded by a heavy presence of security forces, sang hymns and held candles to commemorate the Maspero victims.
Dozens of other protesters organised a stand in front of the Press Syndicate, where they held photographs of victims, as well as of army generals they accuse of being responsible for the killings.
“We will not forget their rights, we will not forget their blood, we will not forget their voices, we will not forget their dreams. They dreamt of a state of law and justice; they dreamt of a state of citizenship,” according to Maspero Youth Union.
