Twenty-two protesters were arrested on Friday in the Kafr El-Sheikh governorate, according to the Ministry of Interior press office.
An official from the Ministry said that those arrested will face prosecution on charges of protesting and violence. The protest, the official added, was made up of around 300 people.
State-owned newspaper Al-Ahram reported on Saturday that a further 28 protesters were arrested nationwide. The newspaper noted that 22 were arrested in Alexandria, three were arrested in Minya, and another three were arrested in Fayoum.
The official was unaware of arrests outside of Kafr El-Sheikh.
Police also used tear gas to disperse protests in Giza, on Al-Haram road, which has been the site of almost weekly protests against the current government of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.
Weekly protests against interim authorities ignited after the military-backed ouster of Mohamed Morsi, and grew fiercer after the Rabaa Al-Adaweya and Nahda Square sit-in dispersals in August 2013.
Since then, opposition groups aligned with the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood have called for marches after Friday prayers. The Ministry of Interior frequently disperse the protests, often using tear gas and sometimes using birdshot.
Wiki Thawra, an independent monitoring group, noted that over 36,000 people have been detained or indicted for political reasons from July 2013 to mid-May 2014.
