President of Al-Wassat Party Essam Sultan was sentenced to one-year imprisonment for insulting the judiciary during the review of charges against him in court.

The court has decided to renew his detention for 45 days for ongoing investigations. Sultan is facing charges of inciting violence in Madinet Nasr and being affiliated with a banned group.

Sultan was detained in July 2013 following the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi where he was accused of a number of charges including: inciting torture, kidnapping and murder near the pro-Morsi sit-in at Rabaa Al-Adaweya, and inciting the burning of public property.
