A bus crashed in the Karimat road on its way to the city of Al-Minya on Monday, leaving up to four people dead and 18 injured, according to state media.
An official in the traffic police department told state media that those responsible for the accident will be subject to the new traffic laws which were amended by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to develop an urgent national plan to prevent road accidents, calling for tougher sanctions on violators of traffic law and their strict application, especially on highways.
Also on Monday, a bus carrying 55 workers crashed in an area west of Alexandria, leaving one dead and 37 injured. Another bus in Assiut crashed killing two and injuring 15 the same day.
A recent government report said that 100,000 car accidents took place in Egypt between 2008 and 2012, with 33,000 killed and another 150,000 injured.
In 2012, a train in the Manfalout area of Assiut collided with a school bus, killing dozens of children.
The World Health Organisation said in a report published in 2012, approximately 12,000 people in Egypt die as result of road traffic crashes each year. While laws are in place to prevent traffic accidents, such as seatbelt requirements and blood alcohol testing, they are not properly enforced.
