Militants opened fire at an Armed Forces officer in El-Marg, north-east of Cairo, according to an army statement Monday.

The officer was heading to work, when militants on a motorbike fired multiple shots at him. He was transferred to a military hospital, having suffered multiple injuries.

Militants have been targeting police and army personnel since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in June 2013, with the vast majority of attacks taking place in Sinai.

Two Armed Forces officers were killed and three army conscripts were injured in two separate incidents in Cairo and Qaliubiya during November drive-by shootings.

In September, two armed men shot a policeman affiliated with the General Traffic Management in Al-Salam City while he was on his motorcycle, and a police officer was killed in a drive-by shooting in Al-Minya whilst on his way to work.
