Security forces in Giza arrested Ahmed Ateya, a former bodyguard for the Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, on Monday, according to a Ministry of Interior statement.
Ateya, 41, also known as Ahmed Sheikha El-Shiemy, had been wanted by the authorities for his involvement in “protesting and inciting violence”, according to a report filed by Awsim police station in Giza, the statement read.
A checkpoint spotted El-Shiemy and arrested him near his house in Awsim.
Badie was arrested on 20 August, 2013, following the army ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood government, and is currently on trial in several cases. He has already received three death sentences, although two of them were reduced to life sentences.
The statement also mentioned other arrests, including, “pro-Brotherhood” Abdel Hamid Metwaly, 42, suspected for murder, while he was trying to leave the country using a forged passport through Borg El-Arab airport.
Since the 3 July, 2013 ouster of president Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood-backed government, authorities have launched a heavy crackdown on the Islamist group and its supporters.
The Ministry of Interior’s media centre official stated that the arrests are part of ministry’s efforts to arrest “criminal and terrorist elements” ordered by judiciary authorities.
