The Ministry of Interior confirmed to Daily News Egypt that two individuals were arrested Tuesday evening in possession of explosives in Daqahleya.

It is believed they were intending to detonate the weapons at the private residence of the Governor of Daqahleya.

A ministry spokesperson said two individuals were apprehended with improvised explosive devices (IEDS) en route to the residency of Hossam Al-Din Imam in Mansoura, the capital of the north-east Delta governorate of Daqahleya. A third individual escaped, but security forces are in the process of trying to track him down.

A separate Ministry of Interior statement said the three men were travelling in a car in Mansoura and were stopped and searched at a security checkpoint. Officers found in the car seven IEDs, large amounts of chemicals and tools used in the manufacture of explosives, Molotov cocktails and mobile phones wired to be used as detonators. Security forces are working towards apprehending the third.

On 7 February, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi appointed 17 new governors, the first reshuffle since he took the premiership. Hossam Al-Din Imam Abdel Samad became governor of Daqahleya, replacing Omar Al-Shawadfi. Al-Din is a member on the board of the Arab Contractors company.
