Former Mubarak-era prime minister Ahmed Nazif was released Wednesday from a corruption case after repaying over EGP 1m, the value of gifts he received from the Al-Ahram institution, according to state-run MENA.
Former officials including former president Hosni Mubarak, his wife, their two children and their wives, as well as Nazif and several cabinet members were accused of receiving gifts worth millions from Al-Ahram.
Mubarak was released from the case in 2013 after repaying the value of the gifts received.
The Cairo Criminal Court ordered Tuesday the acquittal of Nazif along with former minister of interior Habib Al-Adly of all charges in the “licence plates” case due to lack of evidence.
The two were accused of squandering EGP 92m in public fund and making an illegal deal with German company UTSCH to sell licence plates for a higher market value, which violated the tenders and auction law.
Nazif served under ousted president Hosni Mubarak as prime minister from 2004 to 2011. He resigned during the 2011 revolution and, shortly after, was arrested and charged with various different offences including corruption and fraud.
