The Ministry of Interior has released 68 prisoners in an amnesty, and conditionally released 72 prisoners, with a further three prisoners also given temporary cell release.

The release comes as a part of the implementation of presidential decree 18/2015 covering the amnesty for further penalties for some convicts.

The prison service sector said it had formed committees to check on prisons across the nation to choose those deserving to be released according to specific criteria. The committees wrapped up their work by releasing 68 prisoners.

The sector also has a monthly committee for conditional release, which led to the release of 72 prisoners, and another three prisoners given 48 hour releases to visit their families.

The Ministry of Interior’s official Facebook page said the recent amnesty decree comes from a ministry concern on “supporting human rights, and the constant effort on implying the law in its modern form and providing care for the prisoners especially when it comes to dealing with their families”.

The ministry released more than 500 prisoners on 25 January this year to celebrate Police Day and the fourth anniversary of the 25 January Revolution. The release also was a part of the same presidential decree.
