Four journalists were arrested while covering a protest in front of Al-Azhar University, on Wednesday. The protest was organised by a group of teachers who work on a freelance basis for the university.

The four journalists are Mohamed El-Sayed and Mahmoud Gad, who work for Al-Tahrir newspaper, Mohamed Fathy, who works for Yaqeen news network, and Hamdy Abdel-Aziz, who works for ENS, a private news agency.

The police released two of the detainees, including Abdel-Aziz, keeping the other two in custody on charges of storming into Al-Azhar.

“The police released me because no evidence was found of me taking any pictures of the protest, while the rest of the reporters are kept in detention because of the pictures they shot,” Abdel-Aziz told Daily News Egypt in a phone call shortly after his release from the police station.

The teachers demanded employability in their protest and clashed with the security forces. Many of them were arrested.

Moreover, a group of photojournalists were arrested on Wednesday for covering a fire in the vicinity of the Cairo International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Nasr City.
