Visitors to Egypt, including tourists, will be required to obtain the necessary visas before travelling to the country starting 15 May, according to state run Al-Ahram newspaper.

The decision includes individual tourists, who must obtain tourism visas from Egyptian consulates and embassies abroad prior to their departure from their respective countries to Egypt. The decision, however, excludes travellers with organised tourist groups.

Previously, visitors from Europe, the US or the Arabian Gulf as well as other countries were allowed to obtain visas upon arrival at the Egypt’s airports.

A similar decision by Egyptian authorities was taken in 2011, but was suspended after tourism officials raised concerns it will affect the tourist influx into the country.
